David
David Trueheart leaned against the door of his uncles truck.
When will we get to the reservation? he asked his uncle for the millionth time. They had left the orphanage not too long ago.
Soon, little mouse, soon, his uncle told his nephew. The uncle, Sam Trueheart, sighed. He knew that raising this child on the reservation would be hard at first. It was always hard, when a child is young, for them to accept the reservation as home if they had known another place. He knew that as soon as his sister had died, he had to take the boys in. There had been another child, who had been born as his mother died. Since they had no father, the boys were to be placed in an orphanage. At first, he had been told by the elders council that he could only adopt one boy. Then, this afternoon, just before he went to pick up his nephew, his friend Samuel Deer, had told him that the elders had decided to let him adopt the other one as well. He had gone to the hospital where his sister had died and asked about the child his sister had told him would be named Thomas Harold Trueheart. No one could tell him where the baby had been sent. He drove into the reservation and parked his truck.
Well, Little Mouse, why dont we unpack your things from the truck and get you moved into my house?
Were there?! The two- year-old could hardly contain his excitement.
His uncle laughed as he swung the boy down to the ground. He handed him one suitcase and pointed out his house. The boy took off running for his new home.
Tommy
Tommy knew nothing of his older brother. All he knew was what consisted of a babys world: Naps, bath time, feeding time, bottles, diapers, learning to walk and talk, Mommy and Daddys arms, hugs, kisses, peek-a-boo.
David
David had been given an arrow-head necklace. Only it had been broken in half. He wore it every day. And, also every day, he looked for the other half, although his uncle told him he may not find it until after he reached the end of his journey.
Does my journey start now? he asked; every day.
And every day, his uncle said, No. Not until you are almost grown and are ready to leave the reservation should you choose.
I choose to leave the reservation now. Does my journey start now?
No, Little Mouse. You arent old enough to make that decision yet.
When will I be old enough, though?
When I say so, Little Mouse.
Why do you call me Little Mouse?
The mouse is very curious, like you.
Oh. May I go over and play with Adara?
Yes. I will call when you have to come home.
Yes, sir. David ran out of the house and next door.
Sam was very glad that David had made a friend. He had been worried that the other children would not accept his nephew because of his moving to the reservation and not having been born there.
But his friendship with Adara Running Doe had proven his worries unnecessary. His nephew had been welcomed by his friends family like one of their own.
Tommy
At his second birthday party, Julia Oliver gave her son what the orphanage matron had said was to be given him then.
An arrow head necklace with half the arrow head missing.
Tommy had asked Wheres the other half?
The other half is for you to find when you are almost a man. We dont know where it is.
David
David, now three, had started day care. He had made many friends. But also one enemy. He asked his uncle to teach him martial arts.
No, David. If I teach you martial arts now, you will practice it on the other children at day care. You can promise me you wont until you are blue in the face, but you do not know how to keep a promise.
Tommy
A year later, Tommy had also started daycare. His mother had gone back to work. It was hard raising a family on a teachers salary, so she had gone to work at a factory that made boxes. She had risen to manager. She wondered when they should tell Tommy he was adopted. Not now, he was too young to understand. Maybe when they told him about the birds and the bees.
David
Two years had passed. David had started kindergarten. He knew his letters, how to spell his name, how to count to twenty, how many days are in a week and a year, the months of the year, and how to add and subtract a little, thanks to his uncle.
He still wondered about his necklace.
When will I find the other half?
He dreamed about the day he would find it.
Tommy
Tommy started kindergarten the year after. He knew everything his older brother knew, but he also knew how to read a little, thanks to his mother reading to him every night.
He had heard about sex. He didnt know much about it, except that it was something a mommy and daddy did when they were married and very much in love. He knew that babies came from the hospital. His mother had told him after he had seen a friends baby brother.
His friend said that before they came home from the hospital that they lived in the mothers tummy for nine months. He thought that was impossible.
How can they live in there? Theres no room, not with all the food.
David
Two years had passed. Sam had decided that it was high time that David learn where babies come from. He went to the library and checked out a book on sex.
David! I want to teach you something!
David came running from outside. He was hot and sweaty.
Yes, Uncle Sam? You wanted me?
Yes, David. We will sit on the couch and I will read to you.
They sat down, and Sam started to read to David. One chapter later, Sam stopped and asked his nephew,
Any questions so far?
Yes, sir. When will I know Im ready for it?
Youll know. Not for many, many years I hope, but youll know when the time is right.
Yes, sir. But what about where I came from? I remember there were a lot of kids, some older than me. What was that?
That was an orphanage. Its a home for many, many children whose parents have died or can not take care of them.
Could my parents not take care of me?
Your parents are dead. Your father died when you were one. Also, when you were one, your mother was going to have a baby. She did, but she died giving birth. You and your little brother were put into two different orphanages, something the city should not have done. You should have been put in the same orphanage so that you two could be adopted together. Thats when a man and woman who cant have their own children take other children and legally make them their own. Thats what Ive done with you.
Was my brother adopted?
Yes. He lives in Angel Grove, a city ten miles south of the reservation.
We must not attempt to see him now. He may not know that hes adopted. Having us show up on his familys door step and announcing that we are his family may upset and confuse him to no end.
When will we know when he knows about us?
We may never know. When he knows, he can make the decision to look for us or not. He may decide not to look for us for many reasons I cant begin to explain.
Tommy
A year later, Tommy did know.
I want to find my real family, he told Julia and George, his father.
Im sorry; Tommy, but we think its best that you not. The family that adopted your brother may not know he had a younger brother. His mother explained. She began to get upset when Tommys face fell.
Hey, Sport, arent we your family? George asked.
Mom didnt have me the way my friends mothers had them.
That doesnt make a family, Sport. What makes a family is love.
Youre right, Dad, Tommy began, looking at his father, but I wish I knew my other family. Do I have any brothers or sisters?
Yes, you have an older brother named David Alan Trueheart. That was your birth name, Trueheart. Julia said. Tommy went to his room.
Oh, George. You dont think we tried to explain too much at once, do you?
It may take him awhile to understand, Julie, but he will.
David
It had been twelve uneventful years since that day Sam had explained sex to David.
David decided to look for his little brother.
He said good bye to his uncle.
I dont know if Ill be coming back to the reservation or not. Ill have my cell phone with me and Ill call when I decide, alright?
Okay. Ill be waiting. David left. He drove the truck to Angel Grove. The same truck he had ridden in with his uncle to come to the reservation. When he reached Angel Grove, he checked the slip of paper he had written the directions to Tommys house. He was going to find the other half of his arrow head.
Tommy
Tommy was excited. His mother had told him that his older brother wanted to meet him. He wondered what he was like.
Does he know martial arts?
Can we spar?
Will he be okay around my friends?
Jason Scott, Tommys friend and leader of the Power Rangers, clapped Tommy on the back.
Relax, man, itll be fine. If hes anything like you, well take to him immediately.
Yeah, Tommy. His girlfriend, Kimberly Hart, reassured him.
Affirmative, Tommy. Billy Cranston put in.
Yeah, man. Im sure well take to him like a duck takes to water, Zack Taylor said.
Relax, Tommy. Youre going to wear a hole in the table from clenching it so tightly, Trini Kwan said.
David
David knocked on the door. A woman answered.
Yes? May I help you?
Yes. My name is David Trueheart, and Im looking for...
Oh, youre Tommys brother! Hes at the Juice Bar with his friends.
Could you give me the directions, please?
Sure. Just go left when you reach the end of this street.....
When she was finished, David thanked her. He noticed that she was pregnant.
When are you due?
In three months, July fourth.
So Tommys going to have a little guy to pal around with?
Itll be a girl. Im naming her after my great-grandmother, Jessica.
Oh. Well, Congratulations.
Thank you.
David got into his truck and drove to the youth center.
When he went in, he looked around for his brother. He had received his picture in the mail. When he spotted him, he smiled and headed over.
Thomas Harold Trueheart, I presume?
David Alan Trueheart? Tommy asked, standing up and extending his hand.
Brother! I have been wondering about you for years! David said, shaking Tommys hand, and then hugging him.
Ive been wondering about you, too, bro.
So this is the brother you never knew? Jason asked.
Tommy smacked himself on the forehead.
David, Id like for you to meet my best friends, Trini Kwan...
Hi.
Jason Scott.
Hi.
Billy Cranston.
Hi.
Kimberly Hart, also my girlfriend.
Hi.
And Zack Taylor.
Hi.
Hey guys. Did you know that Tommys going to have a little sister July Fourth? Shell think of you as an older brother.
I only hope. Do you know Tae Kwan Do? Do you want to spar?
Do you have a spare gi I could borrow?
Yeah. Lets go to the locker room and change.
July Fourth, Tommys parents went to the hospital.
Julia Oliver delivered a beautiful three pound, two ounce baby girl.
She named her Jessica Katherine Oliver.
Jessis life was uneventful. She went to daycare when she was three, started kindergarten when she was five knowing how to write, spell her name, count to thirty, add, subtract, read, how many days in a week and their names, how many days in a year, the months of the year, her birth date, and how to tie her shoes.
When she was seven, she learned about sex. David took it upon himself to tell her about adoption.
Tommy and I are adopted. That means that we dont live with our parents. You were born to George and Julia. That means that Tommy and I are not your real brothers.
I still love you as if you were.
Im glad, Jessi. Im glad.
Yes, everything was uneventful....Until the day Zedd kidnapped her to ransom her for Tommys Power Coin.
What do you want from me, freakazoid, Jessi demanded as she struggled against Goldar.
Your brothers Power Coin, of course.
My brothers Power Coin? I dont have a brother.
Tommy Oliver isnt your brother?
He was adopted! And he isnt a Ranger!
Oh, didnt you know? He is a Ranger!
Well, after she was rescued, Zordon decided to swear her to secrecy.
Raise your right hand and repeat after me, Jessica.
She did.
I solemnly swear...
I solemnly swear...
That I will not reveal the identities...
That I will not reveal the identities...
Of the Power Rangers even under torture.
Of the Power Rangers even under....Wait, TORTURE?
Yes, torture.
Alright. Of the Power Rangers even under torture.
Very good.
Jessi ran to Tommy and hugged his waist.
Now we have our own secrets again!
